TOKYO (Reuters) - Sony Corp plans to launch 3D TVs next year in a move to spur sales amid slowing growth in flat TV demand, the Financial Times said.

Sony CEO Howard Stringer will announce the 3D TV launch as well as plans to make its Vaio PCs, PlayStation 3 game machines and Blu-ray players compatible with the technology at the IFA electronics trade show in Berlin on Wednesday, the FT said.

The newspaper said Stringer is expected to tell the audience: "As with high definition a few years back, there are a variety of issues yet to be addressed. But the 3D train is on the track, and we at Sony are ready to drive it home."

Sony said the company plans to hold a news conference at the IFA at 1500 GMT and that it may update progress on its 3D TV development there, but declined to comment on the timing of any 3D TV launch.

Shares in Sony, the world's second-largest LCD TV maker behind Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, were down 3.2 percent at 2,440 yen, underperforming the Tokyo stock market's electrical machinery index, which lost 2.5 percent.

Sony, Blu-ray Disc Group Announce 3D TV Plans

Sony confirmed Wednesday that it will build in 3D technology into a range of devices, including a BRAVIA LCD TV as well as the PlayStation 3 family.

The announcement was made at the IFA show in Germany, although the company issued a press release confirming its plans.

Sony said it plans 3D BRAVIA LCD TVs, Blu-ray Disc products, the Sony VAIO PC line and the PlayStation 3. In part, that's because of the growing number of 3D-capable movie screens, or about 7,000 by the end of 2009, according to Screen Digest.

Sony's 3D products will be released in 2010.

Most 3D home displays have been oriented around the DLP rear-projection technology from Samsung and Mitsubishi, with the technology actually manufactured by Texas Instruments. TI showed off the 3D DualView technology at CES 2008, with quad-view plans in the offing. Panasonic has also offered the 3D technology, using a technology called HD frame sequential, which uses two image views in frame sequence managed by active shutters.

Sony did not explain exactly how it would incorporate 3D technology into an LCD screen, unfortunately, although Sony executives speaking at the DisplaySearch TV Ecosystem conference Wednesday in San Jose said it would use active-glasses technology.

The Blu-ray Disc Association announced Tuesday that it has begun setting up a 3D task force for a 3D HD standard on Blu-ray. The 1080/24 x2 format would project 24-frames of offset pixel data, one for each eye. One key requirement will also be backwards compatibility, meaning that "3D discs will also include a 2D version of the film that can be viewed on existing 2D players and 3D players will enable consumers to playback their existing libraries of 2D content," the BDA said.
